If you have had your initial COVID vaccine series along with a booster shot, you may be wondering if you need another booster shot to maintain a higher level of protection from the virus. Some people, such as some immunocompromised individuals, have already had a second COVID booster, while others are still unsure about booster guidelines. The FDA has indicated that the new normal for COVID protection may require an annual booster like the flu shot, as cases are expected to rise through the fall and winter as they have in the past few years since the start of the pandemic. So, when can you expect your next booster, and is it likely to be the same as the shots you’ve already had?
Changing Vaccine Composition
The FDA has advised vaccine manufacturers to update vaccine composition with a bivalent booster that can protect against newer COVID variants, such as the omicron variant. These vaccines may be ready to distribute by early fall of 2022.
Are you eligible for a second booster?
Currently, there are limitations on who can receive a second booster shot. You may get a second booster dose if it has been at least four months since your last booster and you are over the age of 50 or over the age of 12 with certain immunocompromising conditions. These eligibility criteria are likely to shift heading into fall as new vaccine formulations offering broader protection from different coronavirus strains are released.
