Vacation Workouts

Traveling can crush your normal workout routine – but only if you let it! There are numerous ways that you can sneak in a workout without disrupting the leisurely vacation that you had in mind …

Beach Running

If your upcoming vacation brings you to the beach (or you’re lucky enough to live close to one), do more than soak up the sun and collect shells. Sand offers excellent resistance, so not only is it an inexpensive way to keep up with your workouts, but simply walking or running on the beach, instead of a harder surface, burns about 30 percent more calories.

Dive In

Not near the beach, but have a pool at your hotel? Swimming is a good fitness choice for just about everyone, and especially individuals who have physical limitations or find other forms of exercise painful. Water has the unique ability of cushioning stiff joint or fragile bones that might be injured by the impact of land exercises. For a more structured swim, check out some of our suggested water aerobics.

Take a Hike

Are you vacationing in an area known for it’s scenic views? Grab a buddy and head for the hills! Hiking is an opportunity to witness wildlife, nature and majestic views while participating in physical activity. Just make sure you map out your route before you go, and bring enough water to last you through your trek.

Avoid Elevators

Try to take the stairs as often as you can. Simply avoiding the elevators at your hotel and throughout your destination city is a workout in itself. You can burn up to 100 calories by walking up stairs for ten minutes.

Check Out the Amenities

Know before you go if the hotel you are staying at has a gym. While you don’t have to dedicate hours to your workout, go in with a realistic game plan of what you want to accomplish. Try a short routine so you can be full of energy for the entire day. If your hotel doesn’t have a fitness center you can do a variety of moves that don’t require equipment in your hotel room.

Walk it Out

If you are staying in a downtown area, ask the concierge to recommend nearby restaurants. Instead of driving, you can grab a pair of comfortable shoes and walk to get your breakfast, lunch or dinner. A casual walk before or after meals promotes healthy metabolic activity.

Get Adventurous

Rent a bike, go white-water rafting or try surfing. Sign up for a guided tour, or find out if the local rental ship also offers lessons. Trying something new on vacation will not only be a great memory, but you’ll also burn a few calories while you’re at it!

It’s not likely that you’ll be able to keep up your full workout regimen while on vacation. So, don’t set unrealistic expectations for yourself. Remember to have fun, and that accomplishing just 40 to 50 percent of what you normally do is better than nothing.
