October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which means it’s the perfect time to review the importance of self-breast exams. Subtle changes in the look and feel of your breasts can be an early sign of breast cancer. While you won’t want to panic if you do notice any changes—some are normal signs of aging or hormonal fluctuations—it is still important to alert your doctor to any new changes. Early detection of breast cancer yields the best rates of survivorship, so don’t ignore these key signs:
- Breast Lumps
- Swelling
- Dryness or Thickness of the Skin
- Indentations in the Skin
- Changes in Skin Color
- Dimpling of the Skin
- Inverted Nipple
- Breast Discharge
- Breast Pain
Nobody knows your body better than you do, so if you notice any of the above signs, call your doctor for an appointment. It is important to note that most lumps are not cancer—breast tissue is naturally lumpy, after all. However, it is still essential to consult your doctor to rule out other causes of lumps and other physical changes. Even what looks like minor skin irritation could be a sign of something more serious.
