For many people, the workday is spent primarily sitting down. And after a sedentary day of sitting in front of a computer, exercise may be a difficult task to include in your routine. Instead of breaking promises to fit in a workout at the end of the day, it may be most beneficial to start your day with movement, which can inspire you to keep moving as you go about your routine.
Your brain works better after exercise.
Research from the University of Australia supports this idea. Their recently published study found in the British Journal of Sports Medicine indicates that exercise has an immediate benefit on cognition, so getting up and working out first thing in the morning can program your brain for success at the start of the day.
Your body needs to move.
Where exercise sparks an improvement in cognitive function—leading to improved focus, better decision making, and a better mood throughout the day—sedentary behaviors actually impair cognition. In other words, your body needs to move in order to support proper brain function. The specific type of exercise you get to start your day can be anything. You just need to fit in about 30 minutes of moderate exercise in the morning.
Morning exercise keeps you motivated.
Once you get moving in the morning, it’s easier to stay motivated throughout the day. That motivation can inspire you to take short walking breaks away from your desk, which will even further improve cognition as well as your physical health.
