We all find excuses to avoid working out. Use these tactics to stay motivated and consistent in your workout plan—and reach your health and performance goals.
Switch it Up
Finding an exercise buddy to hold you accountable to your fitness goals is great—for a while. As you become more familiar with your partner, it becomes easier to abandon workout plans. To prevent this from happening, find a new (and less forgiving) workout partner every couple of months.
Place a “Friendly” Bet
Challenge your nemesis—that annoying coworker or that neighbor who doesn’t pick up after Fluffy — to a contest. The first one to drop 15 pounds or run a 7-minute mile wins. The key is to pick someone you don’t particularly like (it’s okay if your rival thinks you’re best buds), so you’ll be motivated to beat them.
Don’t Do What You Hate
If you’ve started to dread your workout, it’s time to make a change. Take on something new that appeals to you. If you despise the gym, try working out at home. If you deplore running on a treadmill, try jumping rope, lifting weights or getting out on a track. Bottom line: Find a routine that appeals to you.
Make a Mix Tape
Research has shown that individuals who listen to their favorite music while breaking a sweat will workout for longer and more intensely than those who go sans tunes. So burn a disc with your favorite adrenaline-boosting songs and get going!
