12 Sneaky Ways to Spend More Time Outdoors

When you’re outside, you tend to move around more, get fresh air, and exercise without clocking time like you would at a gym. Sitting inside can have the opposite effect, so it’s helpful to find ways to trick yourself into spending more time outdoors, whether that’s in secluded backcountry or right in your backyard.

The following tips are designed to motivate you to get outside on a moment’s notice, ideally so that you fit in a walk, hike, run, or some playtime with the family to get moving.

A Dozen Ways to Get Outside

1. Keep a set of workout clothes and shoes in your car. This way, you never have an excuse not to go for a post-work hike or afternoon stroll when the weather is right.

2. Go for walks on your lunch hour or eat your lunch in a nearby park.

3. Get a dog who loves walks and fetch.

4. Plant a small garden.

5. Pick up birdwatching.

6. Invest in a new camera with lenses designed for outdoor shooting.

7. Become a stargazer (the outdoors is beautiful at night, too)

8. Host backyard barbecues with plenty of outdoor games to enjoy.

9. Take road trips instead of flying and stop for the impressive views and nature trails.

10. Do your shopping at a local farmer’s market (or a real farm!)

11. Use an activity tracker with alerts for when you’ve been sitting for too long.

12. Keep your blinds and windows open to maintain a connection to nature indoors.

With flowers blooming and spring weather warming up, it’s the perfect time to get outside more often. Don’t let minor health problems get in your way.
